ALTERNATIVE BREAK IN SOUTH FLORIDA

South Florida is made up of three wildly diverse ecological regions that bare little resemblance to each other: Homestead the agriculture capital of Florida, the Everglades a subtropical wilderness full of wildlife, and the Keys that contain the third largest barrier reef in the world.  The South Florida alternative break trips incorporate a variety of service projects designed to help students develop leadership skills through their personal passions and strengths. The beauty of southern Florida is the perfect backdrop for service and preservation. The students will have the chance to mentor impoverished migrant worker children in Homestead, FL. This not only touches a community in need, but allows the students to understand how they can use their education to impact communities around them. The group will also have the chance to help with conservation efforts to preserve and rehabilitate the unique ecological systems found in the area.

RCMA After-school Mentoring Program

Migrant farmer children are sometimes referred to as Ghost children due to their family’s constant mobility and lack of connection to any one community. With the highest school dropout rate among any specific minority people group, migrant children need help in efforts to continue their education. A group called RCMA (Redlands Christian Migrant Association) provides after-school mentoring and tutoring programs for these children. RCMA is always in need of volunteers to help meet these needs. Student volunteers are involved in mentoring, reading, sports activities and light construction.

Florida Keys Coral Restoration Project

In partnership with the Audubon Society, Appleseed Expeditions is helping with the Coral Reef Replenishment Project in the Florida Keys. We need your help restoring endangered Staghorn and Elkhorn coral to its natural habitat off the coast of Islamorada and Key Largo. The Florida Keys contain the third largest coral barrier reef in the world yet we are losing approximately 2% of this coral on an annual basis due to pollutants and development in South Florida.
