Without a doubt, Puerto Rico has an abundance of adventure opportunities, including amazing rainforest, waterfalls, bioluminescent kayak tours, and incredible coral reefs. Coral reefs are often called “the rain forests of the’ oceans” because they are among the richest marine ecosystems in species, productivity, biomass, structural complexity, and beauty. Like rain forests, reefs provide biodiversity lessons from intricate interactions between organisms. Both rely on structural frameworks built by a single group of living organisms: trees in forests and corals in reefs. Also like rain forests, coral reefs thrive in nutrient-poor habitats by containing many species whose complex food chains recycle essential nutrients with great efficiency. Students will be able to explore, analyze, and discuss symbiotic relationships as they relate to both of these fragile ecosystems. There will also be time set aside to help preserve these ecosystems.
