SOUTH FLORIDA LANGUAGE EXPEDITION

South Florida, specifically the migrant community of Homestead Florida offers the perfect opportunity for students to use their spanish language to aid and mentor impoversihed hispanic migrant children.

Highlights include: Leading after school mentoring programs for children from migrant worker communities in south Florida, and exploring the Everglades national park by an airboat.

Sample Itinerary - 3 Days

Day 1

Your group will arrive in Miami and meet your Appleseed Expeditions guide, transfer to a hotel near your service site. Explore the south regional homestead area and have dinner at a latin restaurant.

Day 2

This morning your group will travel a short distance to visit the school where you will conduct the mentoring program. You will be working with children from families who have been transplanted from Mexico and Honduras to work as seasonal laborers. Statistically, these children have the highest dropout rate among all children in the nation, and they often fall victim to drugs and crime. You will tailor your specific gifts to serve these young children, using a simple curriculum for mentoring.

Day 3

Following breakfast, your group will head to Florida city and explore a alligator farm in the Everglades national park.  We will then take an airboat ride and explore alligator habitat.  We may see a variety of wildlife from soft shelled tutles to american crocodiles.  Later we will experience an alligator feeding program and then a snake show.
