Trip Itinerary

Day 1 – Head to Blackwater Falls State Park

Load your bus and head towards West Virginia. Blackwater Falls State Park is named for the fall of the Blackwater River whose amber colored waters plunge five stories then twist and tumble through an eight mile long gorge. Students will explore the park and spend time assisting rangers with needed upkeep and projects in the park. Your students’ time of service will help preserve this area of the Appalachian Mountain range. A trip orientation will round out the evening.

Day 2 – Zip-line Canopy Tour Near New River Gorge

After breakfast the group will explore West Virginia’s natural beauty from the vantage point of the forest canopies. Your group will be able to go zip-lining and enjoy the magnificent views from the tree tops and experience the thrill of the magically zipping through the sky. In the late afternoon enjoy the Timber Trek tour. This trek, high in the forest canopy, has unique obstacles, bridges, swings and zip lines that are positioned between elevated platforms. This tour will challenge and thrill your students. In the evening there will be a guided night hike and astronomy program.

Day 3 – Smoke Hole Caverns and Seneca Rocks

Today the group will head to the Smoke Hole Caverns. The caverns, and the breathtaking beauty that fills them, are created by the constant, trickling flow of mineral carrying water that deposit the minerals making stalactites and stalagmites. After lunch the group will hike one of the trails at Seneca Rocks. Along this beautiful hike the group will learn about the geology and wildlife of the area.

Day 4 – National Radio Astronomy Observatory

Following breakfast, your group will head to the National Radio Astronomy Observatory.  At Green Bank Science Center your students will discover how radio waves from around the universe can be used to discover new planets and interstellar systems. The students will participate in hands on activities, StarLab sessions, and a guided tour of all of the telescopes. Enjoy lunch at the observatory.  After your time here the group will head home.
