NEW ZEALAND

LAND OF THE MĀORI

[TRIP LENGTH: 9 DAYS]

Includes Airfare ● Itinerary can be customized to fit within your time frame or budgetary needs

On this educational class trip to New Zealand, students will learn about unique marine and terrestrial habitats while being immersed in the Maori culture. New Zealand is one of the most dynamic countries in the world with volcanoes, Maori people, mountains and glaciers. It is a country that recognizes and celebrates its indigenous people – the world is a kinder, gentler, more respectful place down here! And while the fanfare surrounding the Lord of the Rings trilogy is waning, visiting the real-life Middle-earth still has an amazing feel for any explorer. Groups will join a registered naturalist and explore and learn about the unique traits of this amazing country.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 and 2 – Arrive in in New Zealand

As soon as your school group arrives in New Zealand you will head out for a city tour that ends at Rangitoto Island. Rangitoto Island has long been a favorite day trip and boating destination for Aucklanders. Explore the lava caves on your way up with your local naturalist. The views from the top are spectacular from the sparkling blue waters and emerald islands of the Hauraki Gulf, to the rugged horizons of the Waitakere Ranges in the west and Hunua Ranges in the east.

Day 3 – Head to the Bay Islands

Spend the day in the Bay of Island’s clear turquoise waters, relaxing at the beach or learning to surf. In the afternoon you will sail the Bay of Islands seeing dolphin and other marine life. With a naturalist your school students will also learn about the marine ecosystem of this habitat. In the evening enjoy a Māori Concert and Haka which is a traditional ancestral war cry, dance, or challenge from the Māori people.

Day 4 – Explore the Temperate Waipoua Forest and the Waiwera Hot Pools

Along with your ecologist, you will explore the Waipoua Forest known for its famous giant Kauri trees. Travel Hibiscus Coast and explore the Waiwera hot pools for a relaxing dip.

Day 5 – Visit the Cathedral Cove Beach and Ocean Kayak along Coromandel Peninsula

Depart Auckland for the beautiful Coromandel Peninsula. Here you will dig pools and bathe in the thermal springs of Hot Water Beach. In the afternoon you will sea kayak around dramatic coastlines.

Day 6 – Head to Roturua and Volunteer

In the morning your school students will help with service work with the C3 church. These projects range from feeding the homeless to helping abused children. In the afternoon you will take the Gondola in Roturua. The Gondola will carry you to 487 meters above sea level to a stunning environment, providing panoramic views of Rotorua City, Lake Rotorua and the surrounding area.

Day 7 – Explore Volcano Mt. Ngauruhoe

This was the volcano known as Mt. Doom in the “The Lord of the Rings”. Mt. Ngauruhoe is New Zealand’s newest and historically most active volcano. It is an imposing, almost perfect symmetrical cone that rises more than 3,000 ft above the surrounding landscape. As you head up to this Volcano you will travel by one of the largest crater lakes in the world. Along with your naturalist you will study tectonic plate movement and geology. Later you will explore the impressive Huka Falls.

Day 8 – Explore Waitomo Glowworm Caves

World renowned and a magnet for both local and overseas explorers, the Waitomo Glowworm Caves occupy a high placing in the New Zealand vacation wish-list. The glow worm, Arachnocampa luminosa, is unique to New Zealand. Thousands of these tiny creatures radiate their unmistakable luminescent light as your expert guides provide informative commentary on the caves’ historical and geological significance.
