On this educational history trip to Washington DC, students will learn about the foundation of our nation and serve the local community.  Travel to Washington, DC, the heart of sacrifice and freedom. You will connect with our nation’s history and culture as you learn about freedom and sacrifice while touring monuments and memorials. Your school group will serve at a food pantry called Food and Friends and learn how to fight hunger in our nation’s capitol. Walk along Capitol Hill, the place that’s shaped our past, present and future. While the memorials themselves are sure to leave a lasting impression, more beneficial will be discovering the purpose behind why our country was founded and what the founding fathers desired for future generations of Americans.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrive in the Washington DC Area

You will be met by your Appleseed Expeditions guide at the airport.  Your school group will then load onto the buses and begin your tour. The first stop will be a walking tour of the Iwo Jima Memorial. Following lunch, the group will visit the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. Before dinner the group will visit the FDR Memorial. Following dinner, the group will participate in a walking night tour of the Korean, WWII, Washington, Vietnam, and Lincoln Memorials.  In the evening you will journey back in time and take part in the Lincoln Assassination Tour.

Day 2 – Arlington Cemetery and the Smithsonian of Choice

At breakfast the group will be motivated and challenged by leaders from Food and Friends to get involved in fighting hunger within our nation. Your school group will then head to Arlington National Cemetery to visit the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and witness the spectacle of the changing of the guard ceremony. Following lunch you will stop by the Smithsonian Museum of your choice and then head over to the National Archives to see some of the most important documents in U.S. history, including the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Following dinner your group will enjoy either a Nationals or Orioles baseball game if available.

 Day 3 – U.S. Capitol, White House, and Head Home

Following breakfast the group will head out to visit to the White House. From there the group will visit the U.S. Capitol Building, Supreme Court, and Library of Congress. The group will take time for a group photo at the Capitol building. Following lunch the group will head to the airport for the flight home.

Day 4 – Add a Day – Zip Line/Spy Museum/Bike Journey

Add a Day and take an Zip Line Challenge at Terrapin Adventures, Go to the Spy Museum, or Take a Guided Bike Journey Through the Memorials.  Some Groups Also Add the Williamsburg or Yorktown Extension.
