It is our belief here at Appleseed Expeditions that combining service with family travel can change our global communities in a positive way.  Our family adventure to Belize is meant to inspire travelers to make a difference in the global community by using whatever gifts and talents they have. Travelers will immerse themselves into a Central American culture that has am amazing Mayan history and is rich in afro-caribbean culture.  This Belize adventure will help to shape the lives of young travelers to encourage them to become future leaders who will promote global conservation while fighting against social injustice.  Our family trips help to solidify the family unit while teaching about other cultures.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrive in Belize City and Visit Liberty Children’s Home

Upon arrival in Belize City, You will be met by your Appleseed Expeditions guide.  You will volunteer at Liberty Children’s Home, a sanctuary for children in need, who provides a natural environment of nurturing and love and a high standard of education. You will get an opportunity to interact with the children and help with the needs around the center. To top off you first day you will enjoy dinner and orientation program.

Day 2 – Visit Caves Branch River and Enjoy Tubing & Zip-lining

Sit back in your inner tube as you drift down the winding waterway through ancient mystical Mayan caves.  The Mayan inhabited these caves thousands of years ago.  Your guide will enlighten you about the Mayan culture with its Shamans and Priests and ceremonies held in these caves.  Connect to a series of overhead cables as you crisscross the rain forest canopy to become a “Zip Rider”; a truly unforgettable adventure that you won’t want to miss.  Learn about the rain forest with a naturalist who will discuss symbiotic relationships and ecological diversity.

 Day 3 – Visit the Mayan Ruins of Xunantunich

One of the most impressive ancient ruins is Xunantunich, which is about 80 miles west of Belize City. The largest tomb in Belize was discovered at this site.  Its name, in the Mayan language, means “Stone Woman”.  Several people claimed that beginning in 1892 the ghost of a woman inhabited the site, referring to her as the “Stone Woman”.  She was purportedly dressed all in white and had red glowing eyes.  Xunantunich, located atop a ridge overlooking the Mopan River, offers impressive views from the top of the structure.

Day 4 – Visit The Black Howler Monkey Sanctuary

Bringing together a unique conservation effort of 8 villages to protect the population and habitat of Belize’s Black Howler Monkey, the sanctuary is located 35 miles northwest of Belize City.  The sanctuary consists of dense jungle, farmland, pasture and small village life in it’s approximately 20 square miles along the Belize River.  Put on your hiking boots for this adventure for a morning on a guided tour exploring and hiking areas of the sanctuary looking for groups of the Howler monkeys.  After enjoying finding Howler Monkeys, known as Baboons, by the local people you will transfer via water taxi to the island of San Pedro.

 Day 5 – Visit Swallow Caye Manatee Habitat

What could be better than an unforgettable day of exploring manatee habitats and snorkeling through thriving sub-aquatic gardens with your family. Travelers will learn about the West Indian Manatees and may even get to view them and get pictures of the gentle giants. Following an amazing “Bar-B-Cue” lunch on the beach, your family will continue to explore this area’s underwater wonderland, snorkeling and enjoy viewing and swimming with a multitude of marine creatures.

 Day 6 – Snorkel Hol Chan Reserve and Shark Ray Alley

Because of it’s protected status, the area’s fish population is exploding.  Your family will take a boat trip to snorkel the reefs at Hol Chan Reserve and Shark Ray Alley, exploring the coral gardens with brightly colored parrotfish.  You can drift over 60 ft. of Caribbean Sea outside the reef and marvel at the whole other world this marine paradise presents. As one of the seven best “animal dives” in the Caribbean, this dive/snorkel site offers the excitement and novelty of swimming with large numbers of nurse sharks and stingrays. Enjoy reflecting on an awesome family bonding day at dinner with your family.

Day 7 – Visit The Belize Zoo

Your family will take the water taxi back to Belize City, following breakfast. No visit to Belize would be complete without a trip to the Belize Zoo. You will see the magnificent creatures that trek the wild jungles of Belize.  The zoo is settled on 29 acres and is home to 150 native animals. The zoo is all natural habitat for these animals with no indoor exhibits.  The animals are all in their natural habitat and with a keen eye you may even spot the elusive Puma.   At dinner, you and your family will be able to take one last look back on your trip.

Day 8 – The Journey Home

After breakfast the group will get packed up and prepare for the flight home.

Qualified trip leader – Accompanying each expedition is a diverse team of experts from naturalists to regional specialists who will share their knowledge and insights on the wildlife, landscapes and local culture. Your guide is with the group 24/7 and also staying with you at the same hotel
