DENALI TO THE GLACIERS

On this school trip to Alaska students are immersed in a unique ecological system that incorporates alpine, sub alpine and tundra habitats. Additionally, students will be inspired to use their gifts and talents to serve others while on this class trip. Explore Mt. McKinley, otherwise known as Denali, an Athabaskan Indian name meaning the “The High One”. It is the highest peak in North America at 20,320 ft. Discover the region’s glaciated landscape consisting of alpine tundra and taiga forest that support a grand array of wildlife including grizzly bears, caribou, Dall sheep, moose, golden eagles and wolves.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Anchorage, AK

Meet your Appleseed Guide. See the city of Anchorage by foot and spend some time relaxing after the flight. Possibly see salmon running.

Day 2 – Volunteer in Anchorage

Today your group will volunteer at a local food bank in Anchorage. Here they will serve and distribute food to the local families in need. In the afternoon your group will head to Denali.

Day 3 – Horseback Ride into the Backcountry

Go north to beautiful Palmer, the Alaska gateway to Denali National Park. There, after short horseback riding lessons, the group will mount their horses for a ride into the wild backcountry.

Day 4 – Visit the Untamed Interior

Head east on the Denali Highway through the remote, untamed interior. Enjoy incredible scenery and see many forms of Alaskan wildlife along the way. Stop on the way to Sheep Mountain Inn and climb a glacier.

Day 5 – Head to Valdez and Kayak Near Glaciers

Head south, for a quick hike to the foot of Worthington Glacier. Stop at Valdez to see numerous cascading waterfalls. Valdez is home of the breathtaking mountains and the terminating point of the 800 mile long Trans-Alaskan Pipeline. Have a chance to explore the fjords via sea kayaks and explore the amazing glaciers along the coastline.

Day 6 – Ferry from Valdez to Whittier

Take a ferry with your school group through the beautiful Alaskan fjords on a 6 hour journey by sea from Valdez to Whittier. Your group will then go by land the rest of the way to complete the central Alaskan loop and return to Anchorage.

Day 7 – The Journey Home

Say goodbye to The Last Frontier and fly back home.

Add an Extra Day Salmon Fishing

Fish for salmon or halibut near Valdez.
