SAFARI IN THE CANYONLAND

[TRIP LENGTH: 5 DAYS]

On this school trip to the Grand Canyon, students will learn about plate tectonics, geology and erosion processes.  Your group will interact with Native American cultures found throughout this region. Discover the geological treasures of the American Southwest, exploring the Grand Canyon, Sedona and  Monument Valley. Explore the South Rim of the Grand Canyon on foot, and learn about the powerful forces that have carved this mile-deep chasm over 200 million years. Hike amid the red canyonlands within a maze of crimson-colored spires. Learn about fossils, sedimentation and the earth science behind the formation of these geologic formations.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrive in Phoenix and Volunteer

After your arrival in Phoenix, you will volunteer at the Dream Center.  This organization’s goal is to provide shelter and food for homeless families.  Students will help through feeding programs, light maintenance and a variety of projects.

Day 2 – Journey to Sedona

This morning your student group will head to Sedona and hike the famous Devils Bridge.  This is a natural arch formed in the sandstone high in the mountain ridge.  Later your group we will splash into the water at Slide Rock State Park.  This is a natural water slide that has eroded into the sandstone.  Your naturalist will teach  students about geology and erosion patterns in this region.  Along the way you may hike Bell Rock if time allows.

 Day 3 – Exploring the Grand Canyon

Experience the Grand Canyon today, taking time to tour all of the best viewpoints before hiking a short distance into the canyon. Along with a Grand Canyon geologist from the Canyon Geology Center, your school group will learn about this extraordinary natural wonder and discuss its origin. In the afternoon you will take in the Famous Grand Canyon IMAX show. Later in the day you can take in an optional Wild West dinner.

Day 4 – Rafting the Colorado and Horseshoe Bend

Today your school group will take in an amazing float trip down the Colorado River.  Float through the majestic Horseshoe Bend and other famous canyons northeast of the Grand Canyon. This journey begins at the base of Glen Canyon Dam.  In the afternoon your group can take an optional journey into Antelope Slot Canyon.  This is the  site where photographer Peter Lik took his famous picture.  This evening you will head back to Phoenix.

 Day 5 – Volunteer with the Navajo Nation and Explore Monument Valley

This morning the group will volunteer in Tuba City, AZ at the Navajo Nation.  Here we will serve food, help maintain gardens and aid with other projects that help the needy in this region. In the afternoon the group goes on a journey through Monument Valley. Led by the Navajo Nation, tour guides will give first hand experiences of their culture and customs and teach about amazing formations.

 Day 6 – The Journey Home

Following breakfast, your student student group will have the chance to finish any last minute shopping before heading home.

Add a Day and Take in Monument Valley or Add in Two Days and Explore the Painted Desert.

Explore the historic Painted Desert and learn about the resident Native Americans.
